Universities are facing challenging times. As a head of unit or department providing for researchers you are juggling internal and external pressures

External

  • Accountability to external schemes such as Athena Swan

  • Finances

  • Student numbers

  • Political changes

Internal

  • Communication hot spots and blackspots across the organisation

  • University systems that don’t quite deliver

  • Hiring and retaining the right people

You need someone who gets it. With over 30 years in and around universities, I bring insight, experience and a passion for making universities places of learning for everyone.

My business values are tied to the projects I love to work on:

✓ Unlocking every puzzle with creativity
✓ Solve every puzzle with data
✓ Cultivate agency
✓ Embrace your UNIqueness
✓ Harnesss the power of everyone.

Future Fit Universities – provision audit

I undertook a review of postdoc development provision for Queen Mary University of London.

Using diverse data from evaluation, attendance, focus groups, other HEIs and CEDARS, I mapped provision identifying areas of best practice.

I charted white space areas for growth in researcher development and suggested communications improvements.

A clear, comprehensive picture of the state of play and routes forward for the centre

The world of research moves fast. Careers are increasingly squiggly. Universities are facing tough challenges.

As stewards of publicly funded resources, researcher developers want to provide targeted, effective career interventions for PhD students and postdocs.

Yet your staff are busy delivering. Those ‘summer’ projects never get the time they deserve.

I bring experienced, cross sector view as I deploy my data analysis skills and creative insights to projects.

Delving into data.

Our provision is constantly evolving much like the world of research. I am therefore ideally placed to help busy researcher developers redesign courses and events to match the future demands of the sector.

You will be wrestling with

  • The pandemic changed training methodologies
  • Researcher engagement
  • Delivering high quality to a tight budget

I will review materials, evaluation data and related provision to ensure you are offering pertinent provision to help your researchers thrive. I am adept at a variety of LMS systems and course material creation for self paced, virtual or IRL provision.

Diversifying Higher Education

As the boss, the buck stops with you when it comes to evidencing that your provision is not only excellent but accessible, fair and equitable.

Research ideas and strategies are richer for a diversity of disciplines, thought, lived experiences and cultures. As the author of The UNIque Guide for Women: Confidently embracing your career in research and beyond, based on my development programme, I am passionate about gender equality in particular. Two values in particular guide my methods and outlook here.

Diversifying Enterprise

Universities are increasingly being asked to demonstrate knowledge exchange, spin-outs and support of local enterprise spaces. Getting researchers to engage however can be tough, especially those who are under represented as entrepreneurs: women and ethinic minorities.

I’ve worked encouraging researchers into enterprise spaces since undertaking an EPSRC funded project for Imperial College London. Enterprise is a great leveler across the academic heirarchies that normally surround us in universities. Everyone has lots to learn!

Business ideas benefit from a diversity of thought, lived experiences and cultures. Our two values in this area guide us in our methods and outlook. Being an entrepreneur myself is also important!
